Satan’s Job Description

As I have started my new position I have had to update several directories and email signatures and other things with my title and job description.  This is important when dealing with a new company and new people who as they begin to interface with me and see my name and title they will understand my group, my expertise, my responsibilities, my limitations and so forth.

Now this is important to understand because this speaks to where I have authority and what I can and cannot do.  This got me to thinking as I was “carshipping” (for long time followers of the blog you know that means car + worship) this morning on the way into the office.  The pastor that I was listening to was referencing Zechariah 3 which outlines for us perfectly the job description of Satan.  If we understand this we will understand his responsibility and his limitations.  But more importantly we will understand the Lord’s response to his job which is where we find true victory.  Take a minute and read the following verses.

Zechariah 3
English Standard Version (ESV)

A Vision of Joshua the High Priest

3 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brandplucked from the fire?” Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by.

Did you see it?  Satan’s Job description? – “…Satanstanding at his right hand to accuse him…”
That means until you leave this earth Satan’s job is to run to God and accuse you and point out every sin that you have committed or ever will commit.  That’s all he does…temptation…tattle tail to God.  And he simply repeats this cycle.

But one of the things that I love in scripture is visual imagery of the Gospel.  Make sure that you see the Lord’s response cause it is crucial….

And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?” *emphasis added by 2mhds author

Did you see it?  This is visual imagery of what we as sinners are.  Plucked from the fire!!!  This scripture teaches us that God chose us, rebukes the accuser, and snatches us out of the fire.  AMEN!

Now look at the very next thing.  Not only did the Lord pluck us out of the fire but don’t skip over the imagery of Joshua’s clothing.  It might seem insignificant if you are not truly seeing the imagery.

The Lord looking at the High Priest (supposedly the Holiest person at that time) and said you are wearing filthy rags.  Now this is not about his close but about his heart.  His righteousness was not worthy of God’s holiness; in comparison it was filthy rags.  So Jesus tells him that  “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.”

What Jesus is saying here is not about his actual clothes but the fact that Jesus died on the cross and in that moment bore all of our sins so that He could take off our filthy rags and put on us His righteousness.  That way when our time of judgement comes God the father will see us with Jesus’ righteousness and our path into heaven if we are truly a follower of Christ will be secure.

So maybe your asking why is this description of Satan so important.  Here is why,  Satan is going to constantly remind you of the sin that you have committed.  Some sin he might bring up for 10,20,30,40 maybe 50 years later cause that is his job.  But if you are in Christ and you know your job description then you know that his accusations have no weight and his attempts to cause you to lose sight of Christ are futile.

So I am going to agree with Matthew West and make my job description for this blog as follows.
