Thomas Redmond Harrison Feb. 29, 1920 – May 3, 2013
At 2metalheads were are blessed and saddened by the homecoming of our eldest patriarch. Thomas was born in Martin County, NC where he worked on the family farm. He was drafted into World War II and later served as a carpenter at Fort Monroe, VA.
That all sounds very official and proper but let me tell you who he really was from a grandchild’s perspective. He was gifted in many areas of life from his carpentry skills to the ability to move his ears without using his hands. He was very accurate with a homemade slingshot and he could always be found in the kitchen at 6am for breakfast, at noon for lunch, and at 5pm for dinner. He might also be found from time to time reading the comics out of the newspaper only to have him tell you that he was getting his education.
He was also a great example of how a husband should care for his wife, in his service of her, his protection of her and his undying love for her. Even when he had to do the hardest thing of his life and let her go.
But one of the things that I remember most about my Granddad is his service to his Lord and His church. I have a fond memory of waking up early and riding with him to pick up all of the widowed ladies of the congregation to make sure they got to church. He always made sure that the heat/air was just right and that everyone could get in to the buildings. He was always the first one there and the last one to leave.
I remember coming down stairs every morning when I would stay with them and find him reading his bible. And I remember looking at it and commenting on how warn out it looked not comprehending at the time how much that meant he actually read it.
I guess that the best memory of my Grandfather will be the fact that if you knew him at all, you would know that he loved Jesus. And in my opinion that makes him one of the greatest men that I have ever known and the other qualities that I mentioned are just icing on the cake.
Granddaddy we here at 2metalheads will miss you while we are still here on Earth but we are hopeful because we know that you have now entered into the joy of your Master and that one day we will be with you again to worship Him side by side with you. We Love You.
Matthew 25:23 ESV
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
